Brenda Pinkston, born July 24, 1959 is a native of Trenton, New Jersey. While working for the State of New Jersey, Office of Information Technology as a web developer on the New Jersey State Official website, she would spend her weekends painting. After retirement she moved to Charlotte, NC in 2006 to pursue her passion as a fulltime artist. Pinkston earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Art, Advertising Design from The College of New Jersey. Her paintings adorn homes across the county and have been selected by several juried exhibitions including, Mercer County Artist 2005, Gallery125, The College of NJ Alumni Exhibit, and many more. She has won countless art awards, most recent, first place winner of the 2015 Black Women in Jazz & Arts Award, and she was chosen to exhibit her artistic response to John Bigger’s Kisumi Market at the Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC. She is an accomplished fine artist and a published children book illustrator.
After college, she worked several years as Art Director for Don Vereen’s Applause, a women's specialty designer salon in Trenton, N.J. It was at Applause that she mastered her style by forcing pen & ink fashion illustrations designed for newspapers and magazines to display a sense of gradual shading using horizontal lines. These lines have become her signature! Pinkston’s unique painting style is her modern take on impressionism. Her paintings come alive with the use of unintentional brilliant strokes of color and dramatically placed subjects to create an emotional closeness. Pinkston jokingly likes to call her painting style "Brendaism". She masterfully uses color to deliver exceptional emotion in her paintings. Through her work, Pinkston eloquently captures life’s emotional authenticity and the universal human condition, basing compositions on moments in time, thoughts, emotions, and experiences as well as concepts such as beauty, honesty, inner strength, and justice. All to provoke sincere engagement and invite us to connect with her narrative on a deeper level.
